Scratch is a free program that teaches the basics of computer programming, provides some educator support, and can be used to create interactive projects (http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Sensor_Boards)
Inkscape is a free vector-based drawing program (similar to Adobe Illustrator).
Gimp is a free photo editing software (similar to Photoshop) (my brother has used this and seems happy with it)
Blender is a free 3d software (I have not used this software)
Google sketch-up is a free 3d software (I have not used this software & am not sure if it is still free or not)
